Profile of David B. Sela

David B. Sela is the founder and president of Copap Inc., a multinational trading company, and Sela Industries Inc., a holding company with global interests.

David Sela began his business career in 1983 as Sales Manager for a Montréal-based company specializing in the export of forest products, and he founded his own pulp and paper trading company, Copap Inc., in Montréal in 1989. Comprised of companies exclusively dedicated to the marketing and distribution of pulp and paper products throughout the world, Copap has rapidly become one of the major companies involved in the purchase, sale, stocking and distribution of pulp and paper, with offices and affiliated companies in Canada, the United States, France, Brazil and China. The company recently expanded into petrochemicals. Copap’s annual sales have grown steadily to close to 250 million dollars, making it one of the top trading companies in its industry.

Over the years Sela Industries Inc. has held significant ownership stakes or involvement in a variety of initiatives ranging from a joint venture with Dorel Industries for the production of car seats and strollers in Brazil to the manufacturing of diapers in Brazil, paper manufacturing in France and a number of real estate projects in Europe and South America.

David Sela is a member of the Board of Directors of several organizations, including I Musici de Montréal, of which he is Chairman, Institut Canadien d’Art Vocal, Jeunesses musicales du Canada and Orchestre de la Francophonie. He also is “Ambassadeur” of the Université de Montréal’s symphony orchestra and a director of several major cultural and philanthropic institutions in Canada, the USA and Europe. In addtion, he is on the Board of Directors of Positive Planet, formerly PlaNet Finance, which fights poverty through the development of microfinancing. He is in the process of setting up the Positive Planet’s Canadian office and has agreed to serve as the Canadian Chair.

David Sela holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Bar-Ilan University in Israel as well as a Master’s degree in Business Administration from McGill University and HEC Paris. He fluently speaks eight languages.
